Can anyone learn to sing?

If I had a dollar for every time I was asked "...but can anyone learn to sing?" "..aren't you just naturally gifted?" "...I could never learn to sing, I sound like a strangled cat".
Ok, ok, ok!! I know for certain that everyone is on different levels when it comes to 'sounding good'. I maintain and emphasise to every new student that they will come to lessons with their own natural strengths, but also their own weaknesses - everyone's body is different after all. For example; I recall with one student having to unpack her voice a bit because; yes, her voice was in tune, and yes her voice was strong - but there were also bucket fulls of tension that we needed to calm down immediately.
So unless you have an actual medical condition, I maintain that with time and practise (PRACTISE), anyone should be able to improve their voice. After all, all we are really doing is teaching a different way of connecting the brain to the voice mechanism. What do I mean - brain - vocal mechanism connection you may ask? If you want to sing a note, any note, your brain sends a signal to your vocal mechanism to stretch your vocals cords to a precise length in order to get the right pitch. If you aren't hitting that pitch, then we must simply teach the brain the right length to stretch the cords to. And on and on we go with the rest of the techniques we can learn to make our voice controllable, and sound pleasant.
So the good news is, if you don't think you can sing well now, you can get better!
